What is a conversion

A convertion in the marketing and business context refers to when a recipient of a marketing campaign performs a desired action that results in a measured success for the business or organization.

Typical examples of conversions are:

  • purchase: A visitor to an online store completes a purchase.
  • Registration: A user signs up for a service or newsletter.
  • Downloader: A user downloads an app, e-book, white paper, or other type of content.
  • Request for quotation: A potential customer fills out a form to request a quote or more information.
  • Contact request: A user contacts the company through a contact form, telephone or email.
  • Booking: A customer books an appointment for a consultation, demo, or appointment.
  • Engagement: The user likes, shares or comments on social media posts.
  • Conversion rate

The percentage of visitors to a website or recipients of a promotion who perform the desired action. For example, if 1000 people visit a website and 50 of them complete a purchase, the conversion rate is 5%.
